Spread across the mountainside is a valley of about 20 hectares—roughly 30 football fields. Within this stretch stand dozens of rock pillars in the most unusual shapes. Some look like giants’ heads, others like mushrooms, trolls, or human silhouettes. They are especially striking in fog or at sunset.

However magical these formations appear, their origins are straightforward. They are built of rock that yields easily to wind, rain, and sun. Over time, nature chiseled the stone into these curious figures.

Legends that live in the mountains

This place has its own stories. The best-known legend tells of a cruel blacksmith who forced people to work on the mountaintop. For his cruelty, he was punished—the mountain collapsed and buried the forge beneath the stones. Since then, the rocks seem to stand guard over the tale.

There are other stories as well. One speaks of an ancient warrior who fell in battle yet remained to watch over these lands. They say his silhouette can be spotted among the rocks if you look long enough.

The Valley is familiar to many not only from travel tales. A famous comedy, “Caucasian Captive,” was filmed here, and the place became even more popular. Since then, numerous film crews have visited—the scenery needs no embellishment, the set is already in place.
